About INVU 70th Anniversary

The National Institute of Housing and Urbanism (INVU) celebrates its 70th anniversary with a journey through the milestones that have marked its trajectory in improving the quality of life of Costa Ricans. Since its creation, INVU has been a fundamental pillar in housing development and urban planning in the country. During the 1960s and 1970s, INVU expanded its popular housing programs and developed the first planned residential complexes, as well as implementing the Rural Housing Program. The enactment of the Urban Planning Law in 1968 laid the foundations for orderly growth in Costa Rica. In subsequent years, the institution led key inter-institutional projects, such as the first National Development Plan and the construction of important metropolitan roads. In the 1980s and 1990s, INVU continued to advance territorial planning, creating the Metropolitan Regional Plan of the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM) and establishing urban development regulations that have been essential for zoning and construction in the country. With the arrival of the new millennium, INVU has maintained its commitment to innovation by updating the GAM Plan 2013-2030, supporting municipalities, and promoting citizen participation. Over these 70 years, INVU has positively impacted the lives of thousands of families, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable and equitable development for the future of Costa Rica. "INVU is not just walls, it is people who, with their dedication, have contributed to weaving the dreams and hopes of thousands of Costa Rican families in every corner of the country. Every project is a testimony to the unwavering commitment to Costa Rican families and territorial planning, which are the true heart of our work. Looking back over these 70 years, I feel deep gratitude for what we have achieved together, and a renewed determination to continue building a future full of opportunities and dignity for all. Our gratitude goes to each of the 168 staff members of the institution and to all those who have left their mark on it over the years," said INVU Executive President, Mata Montero. Throughout these seven decades, INVU has maintained an unwavering commitment to improving the quality of life of Costa Ricans, facing new challenges with determination and innovation.
