About 150 Year Anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU)

150 years ago, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) was established to regulate cross-border postal services.

The abbreviation UPU stands for Universal Postal Union as well as Union postale universelle. The founding took place on 9 October 1874 in the Swiss capital, Bern, where the organisation still has its headquarters today. It also houses the World Post Monument, which was completed by the French sculptor René de Saint-Marceaux in 1909. Since 1948, the UPU has been a specialised agency of the United Nations, and it currently comprises 192 member states. 9 October is celebrated as World Post Day in commemoration of the founding of the organisation. The UPU governs international cooperation among postal companies, including the postal rates for items sent abroad. The stamp features illustrations of vehicles created by Heinrich Blechner for an unissued stamp commemorating the "75-year anniversary of the Universal Postal Union".
