On September 23, 2024, La Poste is issuing a booklet of twelve postage stamps for the European Heritage Days, allowing us to discover the architectural wealth of French Embassies in Europe.
French embassies in Europe, true showcases of French diplomacy, are at the heart of international relations. They facilitate cultural, economic and political exchanges between France and its European partners. These diplomatic missions, present in each capital, play a crucial role in protecting French interests abroad and promoting republican values.
But how can we not talk about French embassies without mentioning their architecture. They can be located in emblematic buildings steeped in history, or be the work of French architects.
Let's discover some embassies:
In Rome, it is located in the Farnese Palace, one of the most important buildings of the Italian Renaissance, in Copenhagen, it is located in the Thott Palace, built in the 17th century in the pure Dutch Baroque style, in Madrid, the building was built between 1876 and 1879, by the architect of the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, Francisco de Cubas y González, in Vienna, it was built in 1904 by the French architect Georges Paul Chedanne known for his creation of the famous Parisian Galeries Lafayette, in Belgrade, this superb building built between 1928 and 1933 is a rare pearl of the art deco style.
Closer to us, the Berlin embassy, the architectural project was the subject of a competition in 1995 won by the French architect Christian de Portzamparc, the first stone was laid on July 10, 1998.
