About 150th Birthday of Arnold Schönberg

Arnold Schönberg was born 150 years ago. He invented the twelve-tone technique, which is of great significance to modern music.

Arnold Schönberg was born in 1874 to a Jewish family in Vienna. He took composition lessons and studied the works of great composers. From 1895 onwards, he worked as a choir director, conductor, and composer; he taught in Berlin and Vienna and also engaged in painting. In 1933, he was forced to emigrate to the USA, where he passed away in Los Angeles in 1951. Schönberg composed a variety of works and wrote a music-theoretical treatise, the "Harmonielehre". He developed a method of "composition with twelve tones related only to each other", the twelve- tone technique, which he predominantly used in his works from 1921 onwards. It is regarded as one of the most significant developments in music history of the 20th century. The stamp shows a portrait of the artist, created by Richard Gerstl around 1907.
