The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, marks its 60th anniversary in 2006. It was founded in order to help build up Europe from ravages of World War II and orphaned children. In 1965 the organization was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1994 UNICEF extended its operations to Estonia that had reestablished its independence a few years earlier. In the years since UNICEF has supported numerous Estonian programs of the prevention of cruelty to children. Since accession to the European Union the Republic of Estonia has started to support countries in need of development aid. Estonian residents and companies have made voluntary contributions to support children that suffered in the Indian Ocean tsunami and the Pakistan earthquake. The support fund from which UNICEF finances national child welfare programs is built up from individuals’ and companies’ voluntary donations as well as charity sale of postcards and products with the UNICEF logo.
