About St Josaphat

St. Juosaphat, whose full name is Ivan Kuncevičius, was born in the territory of present-day Ukraine in XVI century. He came to Vilnius to learn the trade of a merchant. He also joined to St. Trinity Basilion Monastery.

I. Kuncevičius himself belonged to the so-called Unitarian, or Greek rite Catholic church. Simply put, Unitarians are Orthodox Christians who recognize the supremacy of the Pope of Rome. Having fought all his life for the united Christian church, he became the archbishop of Polotsk towards the end of his life. In the latter city, when tensions arose between the Unitarians and their opponents, exactly 400 years ago, in 1623. he was brutally murdered.
