Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Crown Prince Haakon will both be celebrating their 50th birthday in the summer of 2023. In an interview with NRK Radio for its “Summer in P2” series, Crown Prince Haakon spoke about their first meeting in 1999 and why he fell for Mette-Marit: "This blonde southern girl made an impression on me. You really notice when Mette steps into a room. There is an energy that is not easy to ignore. She seemed self-confident and worldly. And she was lovely to talk to. I felt comfortable when we were together." Crown Princess Mette-Marit praised her husband and said the following about him: "He saw me.

He understood me. He was curious. And he held me." The Crown Prince couple has two children. Their daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, was born in 2004. As the first-born child to the Crown Prince she is heir to the Norwegian throne and second in line of succession after her father. The couple's second child together, Prince Sverre Magnus was born in 2005. Crown Prince Haakon is also stepfather to Marius Borg Høiby, who is Crown Princess Mette-Marit's son from a previous relationship. The Crown Prince and his family live in Skaugum in the municipality of Asker, close to Oslo.
