Latvijas Pasts releases a special stamp and a cover in honour of professor Jānis Stradiņš (1933–2019), Dr.habil.chem., Dr.h.c.hist., academician and president of LAS. The print run of the new stamp is 25,000 copies and the print run of the cover is 800 copies. The face value of the stamp is € 1.20 and it corresponds to the postage of items in the weight class up to 20 grams in Latvia.
The philatelic releases have been designed by the artist Jānis Strupulis who has included the portrait of the academician J. Stradiņš in the visual design.
In addition to being a remarkable scientist, a historian of science and culture, an activist, a writer and a promoter of the Latvian National Awakening, the outstanding Latvian academician J. Stradiņš was a caring colleague and a committed family man.
J. Stradiņš graduated from Riga Secondary School No. 5 (1951) and the Faculty of Chemistry of the Latvian State University (1956); from 1969, he was a doctor of chemical sciences and from 1993 he was a professor of the history of science. Over the course of many years, J. Stradiņš’s scientific activity contributed greatly to Latvian society and science. In recognition of his excellent and important work, he received many of Latvia’s highest awards.
