150 years ago, the groundwork for this railway between Hungary and Austria, which is still relevant today, was laid.
On 15 October 1872, Emperor Francis Joseph I granted the license for the construction of a railway from Győr via Sopron to Ebenfurth in Lower Austria. In 1876, the first section between Győr and Sopron started operating, and the rest followed in 1879. Since 1988, the entire railway, which is a partner of the regional transport network VOR (Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region), has been electrified. This commemorative stamp was produced using the intaglio printing technique and features a modern Ventus train by Siemens in its typical yellow-green design.
The company Raab-Oedenburg-Ebenfurter Eisenbahn AG, known today as Raaberbahn AG (GySEV in Hungary), was once the only cross-border railway at the Iron Curtain. Thanks to the collaboration with the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), it remains an important connection for public transportation.
