About Lohner-Porsche Mixte

The era of electric vehicles started in the late 19th century while hybrid propulsion systems were developed around the turn of the century. In 1896, the automobile pioneer Ferdinand Porsche teamed up with Ludwig Lohner to build the Lohner-Porsche, which was an electric automobile with a wheel hub motor. In view of the battery’sheavy weight and the short reach of the electric propulsion system, Ferdinand Porsche came up with the idea of combining the electric engine with a gasoline-powered engine that would feed the wheel hub motor and battery with power via the generators. This was how the first automobile with a serially produced hybrid propulsion system was born. Serial production of the “gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle” called “Mixte” started in 1901. Even though the battery capacity was further reduced and with it the vehicle’s weight, the hybrid vehicledid not sell well because it was expensive and required a lot of maintenance. This commemorativestamp shows a “Mixte“ vehicle of 1901 from the fahr(T)raum museum located in Mattsee.
