The Second World War was far more destructive for the area - where the united South Slavic peoples lived until the beginning of the 1990s - than the First. The then Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia emerged from the greatest war conflict in the history of mankind so far with a completely destroyed economy. In the central republic of this state union - Bosnia and Herzegovina - the economic capacities and the traffic network were completely destroyed, so that immediately after the end of the war, plans for their reconstruction were adopted. Within these plans, the construction of the Brčko-Banovići normal gauge railway (1,435 mm) was an absolute priority.
