About 100th Anniv. Birth Of HRH Prince Philip - The Duke Of Edinburgh

The Duke of Edinburgh was born on 10 June 1921 on the Greek island of Corfu. He was the youngest child and only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg.
The early life of Prince Philip has often been described as extraordinary and turbulent. When just 18 months, his family were exiled from Greece due to his father's involvement in the Greco- Turkish war, and the family settled in Paris. The family broke up a few years later, and Prince Philip was raised by his mother's relatives in the United Kingdom. During the First World War, Prince Louis of Battenberg, Prince Philip's grandfather, changed the family name to Mountbatten and Prince Philip adopted this name.

His remarkable naval career started in 1939 and in which year he met the then Princess Elizabeth, aged 13, during her visit to the Royal Naval College. The couple married almost a decade later, and subsequently Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten received the title of Duke of Edinburgh.
The passion for the Royal Navy brought Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh to Malta. They spent some of the early years of their marriage living in Villa Guardamangia in Pieta, enjoying life as a relatively normal couple.

Villa Guardamangia was recently acquired by Heritage Malta and is set to be restored to its state when the Royal Couple occupied it.
Over the years, the Duke of Edinburgh visited Malta on various occasions, including his 60th wedding anniversary. His Royal Highness passed away on 9 April 2021. Today, 10 June 2021, marks the 100th Anniversary of his birth.
