Austrian Post congratulates one of the oldest stock exchanges in the world
The commemorative stamp "250 Years of the Vienna Stock Exchange”shows a historical depiction of the old Vienna Stock Exchange building. The two animal figures in the Austrian national colors symbolize a bull and a bear market, in stock exchange terms.
The Vienna Stock Exchange, one of the oldest stock exchanges in the world, was founded exactly 250 years ago by Maria Theresa. The architect Theophil Hansen planned the construction of the historic stock exchange building on Schottenring. As part of the redesign of Vienna's Ringstrasse, it was opened in 1877 and became the new headquarters of the Vienna Stock Exchange. A large part of the building was destroyed in a major fire in 1956, but was restored and put to further use. Until 2001 the building was the seat of the Vienna Stock Exchange. Today, the Wiener Börse AG is located in Palais Capara-Geymüller in the historic center of Vienna and the old stock exchange building serves as office space and is rented out for events.
After historical setbacks such as the Vienna Stock Exchange crash in 1873 or the major fire in 1956, Wiener Börse AG is now a modern infrastructure company and operates the stock exchanges in Vienna and Prague. The most important stock index in Austria is the ATX (Austrian Traded Index), which was introduced in 1991. lt comprises the 20 most important stocks.
The new stamp "250 Years of the Vienna Stock Exchange" with a face value of EUR 0.85 will be issued 320,000 times in sheets of 50 and will be available from 28 May at all post offices, at post.at/onlineshop and from Österreichische Post AG's Collector Service.
