Kyrgyzstan and Turkey have long been linked by friendship and a cooperative relationship in the spiritual, cultural, economic and political spheres. One manifestation of this cooperation was the construction of the Bishkek Main Mosque, built thanks to the brotherly help of the Turkish state. The mosque was opened on September 2, 2018.
The Bishkek Main Mosque bears the name of a prominent Islamic scholar and preacher, Imam al-Sarakhsi, who lived in the 11th century. Imam al-Sarakhsi was from Central Asia and his whole life was connected to this region. Imam al-Sarakhsi died in the town of Uzgen, where his mausoleum is located.
Bishkek Main Mosque is one of the largest mosques in Central Asia. Each of the four minarets is 70 meters high. The total area of the facility is 3.5 hectares (8,649 acres), which is enough to accommodate 8,000 people inside and up to 20 thousand people outside.
