S. Moniuska while was living in Vilnius in 1840-1842 he was the organist of St. John's Church, for several years - conductor of the Vilnius City Theater Orchestra, took an active part in the musical life of the city, organized amateur ensembles, held concerts, and took care of sheet music. In Vilnius, the composer has composed cantatas "Milda", "Nijolė". In 1st January of 1848 the premiere of the opera "Halka", conducted by S. Moniuška, took place at Vilnius City Hall. He often communicated with F. Liszt, G. Rossini, B. Smetana, Ch. Gounod and others.
