Ivo Andric was born on October 9, 1892 in Dolac near Travnik in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. As a two-year-old boy, he remains without a father, after which he and his mother move to live with her parents in Visegrad, where young Andric spends childhood and finishes elementary school. In 1903 he enrolled in the Sarajevo Grand Gymnasium. For high school days, Andric started to write poetry and in 1911 he published his first song "At Twilight".
As a Grammar School student, Andric was a fiery supporter of integral Yugoslavia, a member of the advanced nationalist movement Young Bosnia and a passionate fighter for the liberation of South Slavic nations from the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. This great writer, in 1961, received the Nobel Prize for Literature "for an epic force that shaped the themes and portrayed the destinies of people throughout the history of his country." His most famous works are in addition to the novel “Na Drini Cuprija” and “Travnik Chronicle”, “Prokleta avlija”, “Miss” and “Jelena, a woman who does not exist”. In his works, he mainly dealt with the description of life in Bosnia during the Ottoman rule.
