About Fauna (€0.50)

On the commemorative stamps’ issue: “Fauna” there is a grey eagle with the face value of 0,50 € and grey gull with the face value of 0.25€. Grey gull (larus argentatus) is a kind of gull which is widespread on the Adriatic Sea. Apart form the sea coast, Skadar Lake in Montenegro is also the habitat of the grey gull where there are small islands inhabited by this bird. The biggest habitat of the grey gull in Montenegro is “Galebovo ostrvo” (The Gull’s Island) on the Skadar Lake. It is curious that this bird has a nest on the fresh water island. Although they have leather membrane between their toes, they don’t belong to the real sea birds and never go away too much from the coast. Therefore, in the past, they were giving signs to the seamen when they approached the land during their maritime travels. Gulls easily adjust to the surroundings and influence it. They are loud and aggressive, they steal plunder and eggs belonging to other birds. They even attack the young of the other kinds of gulls.
