In 1922 Japan recognized the Independence of Lithuania. Japanese Consulate was opened in Kaunas before the Second War. Mr. Chiune Sugihara served as Vice Consul. During World War II, he helped Jews to leave the country by issuing transit visas or Visas of Life so that they could travel to Japanese territory. Japan recognized Lithuania as an independent state again in September, 1991. Diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Japan was restored on October 10, 1991.
