About Ivan Zovko`s 150th Birth Anniversary

Academician Ivan Zovko, the writer, ethnologist and folklorist, was born on August 20th 1864 in Mostar where he finishes Elementary School, and high school continues in Humac. In Sarajevo he finishes the School for teachers and as a teacher works in a few Bosnian and Herzegovinian places. He conserved and salvaged from oblivion and left us a heritage of national treasure, a testimony of past times and a rich life of our ancestors. He was a member of Strossmayer's Academy of Sciences and Arts as well as a distinguished member of "Matica Hrvatska“(Matrix Croatica). He died in Mostar on March 30th 1900. Besides the published works: "Herzegovinian and Bosnian folk songs“ (1888.), "Islamic songs in the Croatian language“ (1899.), "National Croatian identity by the national devolution“ (1900.); songs, reminiscences and short stories are published in various magazines.
The name of Academician Ivan Zovko still lives in Mostar. In the street that carries his name "Matica Hrvatska“ Mostar in 2000 had placed a monument in occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death as a reminder of the man and opus that has given a great contribution to the development of science and culture in this region.
