It is considered that some European nettle trees are old over a thousand years, and by ageing bumps and grooves appears on them. European nettle tree loves light and dry soil and can grow in poor soil, from rock crevices and around the village houses. It especially likes Mediterranean mild climate and is often planted as an ornamental plant because it is resistant to air pollution, its tree top in the summer provides plenty of shade. Because of its beauty and durability it is suitable for alleys and creation of green fences suitable for paring.
Leaves are dark grey/green during the season, fading to become light yellow before falling in autumn. Yellow flowers without petals, individual or in small groups, occurs in April. Small round fruits of European nettle tree hanging in short cluster; when mature they have brown or dark purple color.
