In 2013 the UN General Assembly proclaimed 6 April the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, in commemoration of the opening of the first Olympic Games of the modern era, which took place in Athens on 6 April 1896. The proclamation of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace highlights the role of sport as a powerful tool for the promotion of peace, social progress, improved health and quality of life, gender equality and education. Sport also plays a role in reducing inequality, integrating marginalised groups and connecting people around the world. Sport builds bridges between communities, encourages participation and contributes to a more inclusive and fairer society, while at the same time providing significant support for sustainable development goals.
To mark the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, Pošta Slovenije will issue a stamp symbolising the importance of exercise, health and connecting people through sport, with the aim of promoting an active and healthy lifestyle and raising awareness of the importance of sport for the physical and mental health of each and every one of us. By issuing this stamp, Pošta Slovenije once again emphasises its own role in the dissemination of the positive values that sport brings to society. Sport is not just physical activity, it is a universal language that transcends borders. It teaches us perseverance, commitment and discipline, along with respect for ourselves and for others – both in sport and in everyday life.
May this stamp be an inspiration for all of us to take a moment every day to exercise, socialise and take care of ourselves and each other. Thank you, Pošta Slovenije, for bringing the values of sport to every corner of our country by issuing this stamp. May it stand as a symbol of peace, health, energy and connection.
