About 50 Years of the Severo Ochoa Molecular Biology Center

The Severo Ochoa Center for Molecular Biology is a joint research center belonging to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM). Founded in 1975, the CBM is one of the largest Spanish multidisciplinary research centers in biomedicine, with expertise in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, and genomics in several research areas: immunology, virology and microbiology, neuroscience, and cell and developmental biology.

The CBM was created under the initiative and guidance of Nobel Prize winner Severo Ochoa, a scientist whose passion and dedication inspired entire generations. He was also joined by Federico Mayor Zaragoza, Eladio Viñuela, David Vázquez, and Antonio García Bellido, each of whom has left a lasting legacy and influence in research institutions in Spain and around the world.

We have been and continue to be home to leading scientists such as Margarita Salas, who maintained her laboratory at the CB for 40 years until her death in 2019, and Ginés Morata, whose work in genetics and development was recognized with the Princess of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research in 2007.

This extensive experience gives the center the versatility necessary to tackle new, unsolved challenges. Our nearly 100 research groups address projects in a wide range of disciplines and stand out for their significant scientific output and technology transfer to industry and clinical practice. They are supported by the most advanced technology provided by Scientific and Technical Services. All of this helps us achieve our mission: to explore the molecular foundations of life for the benefit of society.

This unique seal combines the commemorative logo of the CBM's fiftieth anniversary with a panoramic photograph of our current headquarters on the UAM campus. The DNA double helix, a universal symbol of life and molecular biology research, is prominently displayed in a luminous position. This reminds us of the center's deep commitment to studying the foundations of life, true to our motto: Decoding Life.

By issuing this stamp, Correos invites us to reflect on the importance of science in our society and how research transforms our daily lives.
