The postal series pays tribute to an extraordinary chapter in San Marino history: the reception of over 100,000 refugees between the end of 1943 and 1945. The sketches depict displaced persons, symbol of the suffering of thousands of people fleeing the bombing and devastation of war, and bread, emblem of the sustenance and solidarity offered by the San Marino people at a time of extreme hardship.
The images celebrate the immense collective effort of the Republic of San Marino which, despite limited resources and a population of only 15,000 inhabitants, opened its doors to those in need. Bread represents not only material nourishment, but also a symbol of humanity and brotherhood, values that guided the actions of the San Marino people. The railway tunnels, another essential element of this historical episode, became a refuge for thousands of people, protecting them from the dangers of war.
The postal issue is intended to commemorate the sacrifice and courage of a small State that was able to transform a moment of crisis into a universal example of solidarity and to reaffirm the indispensable importance of peace education and intercultural dialogue.
