About 500th Anniversary of the First Book Written in Estonian

In 2025, Estonia is commemorating the 500th anniversary of the first known book published in the Estonian language. This significant milestone is being celebrated through the "Year of the Estonian Book," which spans from January 30, 2025, to March 14, 2026. The theme for this celebration is encapsulated in the motto: "A nation begins with a book."

The inaugural event took place on January 30, 2025, at the University of Tartu Library, marking the official start of the year-long festivities. Throughout this period, a variety of exhibitions, events, and activities are planned to honor the legacy of Estonian literature and the written word. For instance, the Niguliste Museum is hosting an exhibition titled "Estonian Books 500: Relics," which showcases artifacts from the history of Estonian written culture, tracing its evolution from the earliest times up to the Estonian Age of Awakening.

In recognition of this historic occasion, Eesti Pank, Estonia's central bank, has issued a special two-euro coin. The coin's design features four stylized books forming the letter "E," encircled by the inscription "Eesti raamat 500" along with the years 1525 and 2025. The Year of the Estonian Book is not only a time for celebration but also an opportunity to reflect on the challenges facing Estonian literature and language. Marja Unt, the chief organizer of the event and executive director of the Estonian Literary Society, emphasized the importance of highlighting the value of native-language literature and the Estonian written word during this period.

This anniversary serves as a reminder of the enduring significance of the written word in shaping Estonia's national identity and cultural heritage.
