About Monument to the Heroes of the Battle of Mojkovac

The monument to the heroes who perished in the Battle of Mojkovac is situated on a stone elevation adjacent to the bridge, on the right bank of the River Tara. It was erected in 1966 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Mojkovac.

This imposing creation by sculptor Drago Đurović and architect Mirko Đukić testifies to the bravery and sacrifices of the Montenegrin forces in the battle against the more powerful Austro-Hungarian army. The monument bears the inscription: “They died for freedom and brotherhood; that is why they are still alive today 1915/1916–1966.”

An image of the monument is featured on the coat of arms of the Municipality of Mojkovac, and it is one of the city’s most important emblems. The Day of the Municipality of Mojkovac is celebrated on 7 January, the date of the battle (6 and 7 January 1916).
