The first issue of Matica, a journal dealing with social issues, science and culture, was published in April 2000 and has maintained the same identity for a quarter of a century.
The importance of the journal Matica Crnogorska is primarily illustrated by its esteemed reputation and reception in the region’s scientific, cultural and intellectual community, as well as by the more than 580 authors and collaborators from the country and abroad.
Matica’s bibliography over the past 25 years has included over 1,800 contributions, related to social sciences, literature, linguistics and historical topics. The total circulation of the 100 published issues of the journal amounts to 52,000 copies.
In the introductory text of the first issue of Matica, the editor-in-chief, Marko Špadijer, wrote: “With Matica journal, we were aiming to create a forum for various topics and creative challenges... Within its pages, the past and the present intertwine, complementing each other and aiding the fermentation of the codes of Montenegrin cultural identity.”
