About 150 Years of the First Montenegrin Postage Stamps

The first Montenegrin postage stamps were created based on a draft design made by Duke Simo Popović, and were subsequently printed in Vienna in 1873, following approval for printing being granted by Prince Nikola. These stamps feature the likeness of Prince Nikola I, encircled by two intertwined laurel branches, and were issued in seven denominations ranging from two to 25 coins.

The stamps entered circulation on 1 May 1874, marking an important milestone in the history of the postal system of Montenegro.

In 1874, postal activity was raised to a higher level when Montenegro became a member of the World Postal Union, and the use of dated postal handstamps and other postal materials was introduced.

The first Montenegrin postage stamps serve as a testament to the enduring role of the post office in preserving cultural and historical heritage.
