About 250th Anniversary of Aleksije Lazović’s Birth

Aleksije Lazović (1774–1837) is a notable figure from the renowned Lazović family of painters, who painted the interiors of a large number of churches and monasteries in Montenegro, Central Dalmatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Western Serbia during the 18th and 19th centuries. It is assumed that he was born in Bijelo Polje. He acquired the basics of his painting knowledge from his father Simeon, and it is believed that he further honed his skills as a painter in Dubrovnik.

Among his most recognised works in Montenegro are the Holy Doors of the Monastery of St. Nicholas in Nikoljac, the iconostasis in Reževići Monastery, as well as the iconostasis in Savina Monastery near Herceg Novi, which he painted together with his father Simeon.

In Šibenik, he painted an iconostasis for the Church of the Assumption of the Holy Mother of God. He also worked on the painting of the parecclesion for the chapels of St. Demetrius and St. Nicholas in Dečani, and the icons in the Church of St. Nicholas and the large Church of the Holy Mother of God for the Patriarchate of Peć.
