About 550th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Isabella the Catholic as Queen of Castile

On December 13, 1474, the Alcázar of Segovia opened its doors to change history.

From there, Princess Isabel left to walk towards the old Royal Church of San Miguel - located in the Plaza Mayor of the city - where she was proclaimed Queen of Castile. Her proclamation is considered one of the most important historical events in the city of Segovia.

In 2024, we celebrate the 550th anniversary of a reign that changed history. The proclamation of Isabel la Católica in Segovia began the process of unification of the kingdoms, laying the foundations for the formation of Spain as a political entity.

During her reign, Spain's overseas expansion began. Her support for Columbus in 1492 led to the discovery of America, opening a new chapter in history.

This not only changed the known geography, but made Spain a global power with a crucial role in the development of the Modern Age.

Isabel defied the limitations faced by women of her time, exercising her leadership with determination in a world dominated by men.

Due to her great political skills and valuable legacy, she is considered one of the most influential women in the history of humanity.

The city of Segovia commemorates the 550th anniversary of the proclamation of Isabel la Católica as Queen of Castile with an illustrated stamp based on one of the most outstanding works that recount the event. The mural painting Proclamation of Queen Isabel by the artist and famous Segovian stained glass artist Carlos Muñoz de Pablos, Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts 2023, is located in the Sala de la Galera of the Alcázar of Segovia.

Made in the second half of the 20th century, the painting represents the proclamation of the queen on December 13, 1474 in the Royal Church of San Miguel in Segovia. As an anecdote, it is worth noting that some of the characters portrayed are descendants of people who were present at that historical event.
