Historical Heritage Brskovo
300 Historical Heritage Brskovo Brskovo is an abandoned medieval town near Mojkovac. Serbian King Uroš I Nemanjić is considered to be the founder of Brskovo. It was he who initiated mining activity, bringing Saxons – skilled miners from the Germanic tribes of modern-day northern Germany – to this area. After the mine was opened, the extraction of silver, lead and copper ore began, and Brskovo soon grew into a large trading town. The importance of medieval Brskovo is also underscored by the fact that the most illustrious families from Dubrovnik and Kotor were among its inhabitants, and the residence of the Dubrovnik consul was located there as well. During archaeological excavation of this locality, a silver coin of the Roman ruler Nerva was found, so it is assumed that the mine existed in Roman times. Montenegro Post is publishing a commemorative postage stamp and a first day cover as part of the “Historical Heritage of Brskovo” edition.
