About America UPAEP - Environment, La Palma World Biosphere Reserve

The La Palma Biosphere Reserve stamp is a beautiful representation of the natural wealth of this unique place and is issued as part of the America UPAEP series.

The stamps of this series have been issued since 1989 by the UPAEP member countries and are based on a common theme, this year, the environment.

The La Palma World Biosphere Reserve, located in the Canary Islands, was included in the UNESCO list because of its exceptional biodiversity and extreme landscapes. The reserve encompasses diverse ecosystems, from lush laurel forests to impressive mountains and coastlines.

La Palma is highly biodiverse and is home to numerous endemic species found nowhere else in the world, such as the Canary Island pine and birds such as the chaffinch and the Canary Island woodpecker.

Despite its protected status, the reserve faces a number of challenges, including climate change, urbanisation and excessive tourism, not to mention natural disasters such as the latest volcano eruption.

The conservation of its ecosystem is vital to maintain biodiversity and the integrity of the natural environment.

The Reserve offers a variety of ecotourism activities, such as hiking, bird watching and educational tours, which allow visitors to enjoy and learn about this valuable environment.

The La Palma World Biosphere Reserve is not only a natural treasure, but also a symbol of the global commitment to conservation. Through the stamp issued, the aim is to promote respect and protection of this natural heritage, urging everyone to participate in its conservation.

The stamp shows a beautiful image of one of the impressive waterfalls that can be seen, especially in the north of the island of La Palma. This one is located in the Bosque de los Tilos, a unique place where the thickness of the green mingles with the water and the sound of the birds and other living beings that inhabit it.
