Fishermen and Hunters’ Day in Greenland
In Greenland the annual fishermen and hunters’ day is celebrated on the 15th November. The fishing and hunting association KNAPK was founded in 1953 and, since then, the observance day has become a true celebration of sustainable fishing and hunting that includes communal worship, coffee and cake, competitions, folk festivities and award ceremonies. The Greenlandic Centre in Copenhagen has previously collaborated with the National Museum and the Zoological Museum, both located in Copenhagen, on a joint promotion of the annual Fishermen and Hunters’ Day through a wide range of events. Previously, a researcher of micro-organisms in traditional Greenlandic food at the University of Greenland, Ilisimatusarfik, has also held lectures. The Four Greenlandic Centres in Denmark also annually mark this celebration of the fishing and hunting industry as well as its cultural and economic significance for Greenland.
