About 150th Anniversary of the Universal Postal Union

The 9th of October, when World Post Day is celebrated, marks the 150th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union, one of the oldest organisations. Latvijas Pasts releases a special stamp and cover to commemorate this occasion.

Founded on the 9th of October 1874 in Bern, Switzerland, the Universal Postal Union is the second oldest international organisation in the world, comprising 192 member countries. This year, the member countries are celebrating its 150th anniversary, and in recognition of this milestone, Latvijas Pasts is releasing a special stamp and cover.

The print run of the new stamp will be 10,000 copies and the print run of the cover will be 500 copies. The face value of the stamp is €2.08, corresponding to the postage of letter-post items in the weight class up to 20 grams within the 14th group of countries.

The postal industry holiday is traditionally observed to enhance awareness of the significance of postal services in the everyday lives of individuals and businesses. The theme for this year’s World Post Day is: “150 years of enabling communication and empowering peoples across nations”. The postal industry stands unmatched, as it is able to provide services to anyone and anywhere, reaching even the most remote corners of the world, and it has around 5.3 million employees.

Latvia was admitted to the Universal Postal Union on the 1st of October 1921, after the de jure recognition of the country, and its membership was renewed on the 17th of June 1992, after the restoration of the country’s sovereignty.

The next philatelic release is scheduled for the 30th of October.

Philatelic works issued by Latvijas Pasts are highly valued both among the customers and philatelic collectors and experts. International associations of collectors of philatelic materials have determined that the stamps issued by Latvijas Pasts are on par with the philatelic releases issued by the largest countries in the world. As a result, these stamps are routinely included both in the catalogues of philatelic releases recognised around the world and in the collections of prestigious collectors.
