The General Postal Union was founded on 9 October 1874 when 22 countries signed the Treaty of Berne in the Swiss city of that name. Today the organisation is known as the Universal Postal Union (UPU). The vision of its founders was to establish a single postal network to serve people all over the world.
Today, 150 years later, this vision has been realised, since this intergovernmental organisation unites the postal networks of 192 member countries, with more than 680,000 post office branches throughout the world, and acts as a specialised agency of the United Nations. The UPU has faced various challenges over the years. Current challenges include ensuring sustainable development, defining a new role for postal operators in a highly changeable and technologically advanced environment, and the opening up of the UPU to external actors.
Slovenia has been a member of the UPU since 1992 and we are proud that, since 2022, the leadership of what is the second oldest international organisation in the world includes a former adviser to Pošta Slovenije’s executive management, Marjan Osvald, who has been elected Deputy Director General of the International Bureau of the UPU for the period 2022–2025. The election of a representative of Slovenia to such an important position is a recognition of his work to date and the activities of Pošta Slovenije within the UPU.
