About Road Safety - Don't use your Phone While Driving!

Road safety = Don't use your phone while driving!

Using a phone while driving reduces a driver's concentration and their ability to be attentive to what is happening on the road and in its near surroundings. A distracted driver can miss key information from the environment. They can fail to see other road users (pedestrians, cyclists, other vehicles) or miss important traffic signals, as a result of which they are unable to react in time to developing situations. This can result in serious accidents. Drivers using their phones at the wheel often cause traffic jams, have longer braking times, are unable to maintain a steady speed and frequently change lane without looking.

Studies in other countries have shown that drivers writing text messages or checking social media spend an average of five seconds concentrating on their phone instead of on their driving. In this time, a vehicle covers a distance of more than 83 metres if travelling at a speed of 60 km/h, or almost 70 metres if travelling at 50 km/h. The risk is similar to driving with your eyes closed.

"It is very important that all road users are aware of how distractions resulting from the use of mobile phones play a key role in causing accidents. Using the road requires full attention! Phone calls, messages and checking or posting on social media can wait. Don't be engrossed in your screen while driving, and don't be online when you're on the road!"
