Olympic Medals
Romfilatelia introduces into circulation on Friday, August 23rd, 2024, the philatelic issue Olympic Medals - Paris 2024, consisting of seven postage stamps, an imperforated souvenir sheet and a set of three First Day Covers, within the issue being illustrated the images of the laureates in sports disciplines in which our country had participants.
Nine medals - three gold, four silver and two bronze - make up the ‘harvest’ with which the Romanian athletes participating in the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, held between July 26th and August 11th, 2024, returned home.
The sports, in which they achieved these remarkable results, are swimming (100m freestyle and 200m freestyle), men’s double sculls, lightweight women’s double sculls, women’s double sculls, rowing (eight), women’s coxless pair, women’s gymnastics and weightlifting (49 kg).
The images of the Romanian athletes present on the award podiums are represented as follows on the postage stamps of the issue:
On the postage stamp with the face value of Lei 25 is illustrated the swimmer David Popovici, a high-class athlete, winner of the gold medal in the 200 m freestyle and the bronze medal in the 100 m freestyle. He is the youngest world record holder to win gold at both the World and European Championships in 2021 and 2022.
On the postage stamp with the face value of Lei 22 are represented the images of the athletes Florian Enache and Andrei Cornea, winners of the gold medal in the men’s double sculls event. They are also gold medal winners at the 2024 European Championship in Szeged.
On the postage stamp with the face value of Lei 4 are reproduced the images of the athletes Simona Radiș and Ancuța Bodnar, the winners of the silver medal in the women’s double sculls event. They also took the podium as the gold medal winners for the women’s eight event. They join the elite of world rowing by winning gold medals at the European Championships and the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.
On the postage stamp with the face value of Lei 3 is depicted the image of Mihaela Valentina Cambei, the winner of the silver medal, in the 49 kg weightlifting category. Declared the best weightlifter in Europe in 2023, she is the holder of several gold and silver medals won at the World and European Championships, also holder of two European records.
On the postage stamp with the face value of Lei 6 are illustrated the images of the athletes Ioana Vrînceanu and Roxana Anghel, winners of the silver medal in the women’s coxless pair. It is worth mentioning that they won the gold and silver medals at the World and European Championships.
On the postage stamp with the face value of Lei 13 are reproduced the images of the rowers Ionela Cozmiuc and Gianina van Groningen, winners of the silver medal in the lightweight women’s double event. Along with the silver medal, Ionela Cozmiuc added the gold medal won in the women’s eight event. Both athletes have silver and gold medals won at the World and European Rowing Championships.
On the postage stamp with the face value of Lei 2 is depicted the gymnast Ana Maria Bărbosu, winner of the bronze medal in the women’s floor. Holder of multiple gold medals on vault, parallel bars and beam at the 2020 junior championships, she won bronze at Paris 2024 after correcting a serious refereeing error in her matchup with American gymnast Jordan Chiles.
On the postage stamp of the issue souvenir sheet with the face value of Lei 33 are illustrated the images of the rowers Simona Radiș, Ioana Vrînceanu, Amalia Bereș, Adriana Adam, Maria Lehaci, Ancuța Bodnar, Roxana Anghel, Maria Magdalena Rusu and Ștefania Victoria Petreanu, the Romanian representatives in the women’s eight rowing event, gold medal winners.
Along with the rowers who also participated in other events, Amalia Bereș, Adriana Adam, Maria Lehaci, Maria Magdalena Rusu and Ștefania Victoria Petreanu are part of the category of elite athletes, winners of gold medals in the competitions held in the World and European Championships events.
The set of 3 First Day Covers of the issue presents in its graphics the crew of the women’s eight rowing event.
