On the 9th of August this year, Latvijas Pasts releases a stamp dedicated to Kemeri National Park, the third largest national park in Latvia. The design, created by the artist Aleksejs Naumovs, features a miniature painting that captures the park’s characteristic landscape and the Great Kemeri Bog Boardwalk.
The stamp dedicated to Kemeri National Park and highlighting one of Latvia’s natural gems, is the eighth in the series Latvian National Parks, which was launched in 1997.
The stamp and the cover have been designed by the artist Aleksejs Naumovs, professor and former rector at the Art Academy of Latvia. A. Naumovs designed the stamp in the form of a miniature painting to highlight the scenic appeal of the national park, including its landmark, the Great Kemeri Bog Boardwalk.
“Painting in Kemeri National Park was a truly enjoyable experience for me. It is a unique place where a natural and authentic environment has been preserved, and anyone interested can visit it,” admitted the artist, praising the initiative of Latvijas Pasts to popularise Latvia’s unique values in this way.
Kemeri National Park was established in 1997 with the aim of safeguarding the distinctive natural, cultural-historical and balneological treasures found within its boundaries. The area is known for its spacious, little modified wetlands, which include both high and low marshes, as well as lagoon lakes. The formation of mineral waters and curative mud in Kemeri National Park played a significant role in the development of a thriving resort industry in the past. The park is situated in the western part of Jurmala territory and in Jelgava, Marupe, and Tukums Municipalities. The total area of Kemeri National Park is 38,165 hectares (including 1,954 hectares of sea water area).
The stamp series Latvian National Parks was launched in 1997, and six stamps were issued until 1999, featuring the specially protected areas of Latvia: Moricsala, Krustkalni, Slitere and Teici Nature Reserves, Gauja National Park and Grini Nature Reserve. The series was resumed in 2023, issuing a stamp dedicated to Razna National Park. Collectors have shown great appreciation for this series, as it features miniature graphics that promote the image of Latvia.
