About 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad

Magyar Posta is marking the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad, which is being held in Budapest between 10. and 23. September 2024, with a stamp issue. Forty thousand copies of the special stamp designed by Lounge Design Kft. were produced by ANY Security Printing Company. The new issue goes on sale at Filaposta, philately specialist services, certain post offices and www.posta.hu from 5 August 2024.

In the light of Hungary’s astounding chess heritage and its place in the chess world today, the International Chess Federation (Fédération Internationale des Échecs, FIDE) is proud that Hungary is hosting the 45th Chess Olympiad this year. Arkady Dvorkovich, FIDE’s President, said: “The Federation, in cooperation with the organisers, is endeavouring to make the event a memorable and inclusive experience for the players and spectators alike, and to make them feel genuinely at home in Hungary.” The FIDE President referred to the tournament being held from 10 to 23 September as monumental and an event that would be another milestone in Hungary’s rich chess history. Hungary is among the most successful chess nations, having won 12 team medals at the Olympiads to date.

The 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad will be held in the BOK Sports Hall, one of the most modern event centres in the Hungarian capital, which can accommodate up to 10,000 people. In parallel with the tournament, Budapest will also host the Congress of the Federation, which is celebrating the centenary of FIDE’s foundation.

The special stamp as well as the accompanying philatelic publications feature the design elements and logo of the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad. The stamp design evokes the dark and light squares of the chess board. The main element of the first day cover is the figure of the black queen. The event’s logo appears in the imprint of the special postmark on the first day cover.
