Bocce is an ancient sport that originated in Greece, which is especially popular in Mediterranean countries. It is played with bocce balls on an open-air court.
The bocce court is a flat, soil court, 27.5 m long by 2.8–4 m wide, marked with lateral and transverse lines and covered in fine sand. A fence is usually placed beyond the transverse boundaries of the playing area to stop the balls.
The bocce balls can be made of solid wood, plastic or metal. Steel balls with a special core are used for bocce sporting competitions. The jack, called a bulin or bula, is the smallest ball used in the game, much smaller in diameter than the other balls. In classical disciplines, the bula is mostly red, while in technical disciplines it is usually white. This special ball represents the target towards which the bocce balls are rolled.
Bocce has been played in the Boka Kotorska since ancient times, while active and organised playing in clubs started in 1950, and these clubs are nowadays achieving significant results.
