About Archeology - Tartesian Remains From The Turuñuelo Houses Site

Correos continues its ARCHEOLOGY series this 2024, dedicating a new stamp to the Tartessian remains from the Casas del Turuñuelo site in Guareña (Badajoz).

The archaeological site of Casas del Turuñuelo, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest as an Archaeological Zone, has gained recognition since the beginning of excavations in 2014. Its uniqueness lies in the unknown construction techniques for the Tartessian culture, making it the best preserved in the western Mediterranean . The most notable discovery is the "Great Hecatomb", which includes remains of 53 horses, 4 cows, 3 pigs and a dog, along with exceptional finds such as a marble sculpture from the Cyclades islands, Mediterranean glass vessels, textiles and the fragment oldest wool mill on the Iberian Peninsula.

The V Excavation Campaign in 2023 revealed five extraordinary anthropomorphic busts from the 5th century BC, considered the first faces of the Tartessian culture. The sculptural quality of these busts provides valuable information about civilization and rewrites history. It is believed that they represent two female divinities and a warrior, placing these representations in the national archaeological context, prior to the famous Lady of Elche. It is these faces that appear on the seal.

These discoveries highlight the importance of archeology in the region at a national and international level. After being exhibited in the exhibition "The first faces. Latest finds in the Archaeological Site of El Turuñuelo de Guareña", the faces were transferred to the Archaeological and Paleontological Museum of the Community of Madrid. The exhibition "The Last Days of Tartessos" attracted approximately 65,000 visitors. The historical and archaeological relevance of these finds has been recognized by national and international media, with the cover of the magazine "Muy Historia" in September being a testimony to their importance. The Casas del Turuñuelo site stands as an invaluable testimony of the ancient Tartessian civilization.
