About 1100th Birthday of St. Wolfgang

Saint Wolfgang is particularly revered in the Salzkammergut region. By the 13th century, the pilgrimage church of St. Wolfgang had already become a place of pilgrimage.

Wolfgang of Regensburg was born around 924 in southwestern Germany. He became a teacher, a Benedictine monk, a priest, and eventually the Bishop of Regensburg. Around 976, he spent some time as a hermit at Falkenstein above St. Gilgen on Lake Wolfgang. According to legend, he threw an axe from there into the valley to mark the spot where a church should be built. Today, the pilgrimage church of St. Wolfgang stands at this site, marking the end of the pilgrimage route from Regensburg to St. Wolfgang in the Salzkammergut region. Saint Wolfgang is often depicted with a bishop's crozier and a church, and frequently with an axe. The stamp motif features a Gothic statue of the saint from the Baroque Schwanthaler altar in the church of St. Wolfgang. A maximum card will also be issued for this commemorative stamp.
