About Asteroid Day - 3

Asteroid Day is an annual event observed on June 30th to raise awareness about asteroids and the potential threat they pose to Earth. It was co-founded in 2014 by astrophysicist and musician Dr. Brian May, Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart, filmmaker Grig Richters, and B612 Foundation President Danica Remy.

The date, June 30th, marks the anniversary of the largest asteroid impact in recorded history, the Tunguska event, which occurred in Siberia, Russia, in 1908. The event flattened over 2,000 square kilometers of forest, equivalent to the size of a major metropolitan area.

Asteroid Day aims to educate the public about asteroids, their origins, and potential hazards they pose to Earth, as well as to promote awareness about asteroid research and mitigation strategies. It involves various activities such as public lectures, educational programs, media events, and stargazing parties organized by scientists, educators, and enthusiasts worldwide.
