75th anniversary of the birth of Gino Strada
Born on 21 April 1948, Gino Strada decided to apply his experience in emergency surgery to the care of war wounded working with the International Red Cross in many countries around the world. In 1994, together with his first wife Teresa Sarti and other friends, he founded EMERGENCY, an independent and neutral association set up to bring free high quality medical and surgical treatment to the victims of wars, landmines and poverty and to promote a culture of peace, solidarity and respect for human rights. In 2007 EMERGENCY set up in Sudan the first totally free heart surgery centre in Africa, named Salam, "peace", reproduced with a stylised image on the stamp together with Gino Strada's phrase "Rights either belong to everyone or they are privileges".
