Art - From the Treasury of the Estonian Art Museum
Konrad Mägi (1878–1925) primarily painted landscapes, but often also portraits. Konrad Mägi mostly painted women. The postage stamp depicts Marie Reisik (1887–1941), one of the most important figures in the Estonian feminist movement. She was active in journalism, politics, education, and many other fields. Marie Reisik is 29 years old in the picture and had probably been acquainted with Mägi for several years. Reisik, who had arrived from Paris, possessed a similar European bohemian spirit as Konrad Mägi, boldly opposing conventional norms of behaviour and demanding that women be treated equally to men. This portrait is probably the most psychological and personal in the series of female portraits by Mägi. The painting belonged to Marie Reisik, who died in 1941. Before her death, she paid the doctor for her treatment with three works by Mägi, including this one.
