To pay homage to an emblematic Romanian higher education institution, Romfilatelia introduces into circulation on Monday, June 12th, 2023, the issue of postage stamps entitled Faculty of Pharmacy of “Carol Davila” University, of Medicine and Pharmacy, 100 Years, consisting of a postage stamp a perforated souvenir sheet and a First Day Cover.
The first form of pharmaceutical education existing in a school organized and regulated by the state authorities was established in 1857 when, by the Journal of the Administrative Council of Wallachia (July 29th, 1857), the School of Minor Surgery, founded in 1855 in Bucharest by Carol Davila together with Nicolae Kretzulescu, was transformed into the National School of Medicine and Pharmacy “marking the beginning of higher pharmaceutical education in Romania”.
After 1880 there were initiatives by pharmacists and student pharmacists to reorganise pharmaceutical education. Supported by Carol Davila, these initiatives aimed at creating a separate school of pharmacy, obtaining the title of licentiate on completion of studies, creating a doctorate in pharmacy, etc.
Thanks to the efforts and perseverance of the professors of the Higher School of Pharmacy, professional and scientific pharmaceutical organizations and practicing pharmacists, this goal was achieved by the establishment of autonomous Pharmaceutical University Education in Romania, the first Faculty of Pharmacy in the country being created in Bucharest on June 12th, 1923.
The Faculty of Pharmacy within the “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy is the pharmaceutical education institution with the longest tradition in Romania and one of the most successful at national level.
At present, the Faculty of Pharmacy is running a Bachelor’s degree programme taught in Romanian and French. The “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy cooperates with various institutions that are members of the Francophone University Agency in Romania and abroad, thus broadening the horizons of French speakers and offering them studies with a solid scientific bio-medical basis respecting, at the same time, cultural, ethnic and linguistic diversity.
The Faculty of Pharmacy offers students an integrated approach to pharmaceutical sciences and pharmaceutical practice in line with contemporary trends, with the core component of the educational process being bachelor’s degree studies.
On the postage stamp with the face value of Lei 2.90 of the issue and on the First Day Cover is reproduced the image of the bust of Ștefan Minovici, the first dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, with an essential contribution in the foundation of the institution.
On the souvenir sheet of the issue, bearing the postage stamp with the face value of Lei 34, there is depicted the obverse of the anniversary medal, “Davila Centenary 1828-1928”, with the effigy of the doctor Carol Davila (1828-1884), together with a symbolic composition - on a pedestal, the goddess of health, Hygieia, holding in her right hand the staff of Asclepius (Greek god of medicine), is shown in the situation of alleviating the suffering of a sick person. It is known that his sister Panacea, the goddess of healing, nursed the sick using the remedies.
Happy Anniversary!
Vivat, crescat, floreat!
Romfilatelia thanks the specialists of the Faculty of Pharmacy of “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest for their documentary and photographic support in the production of this issue of postage stamps.
