The State of Israel and the Republic of Cyprus enjoy close diplomatic relations that are reflected in various different realms: security, economy, energy, culture and social ties. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the first visit by Israel’s late President Ezer Weizman to Cyprus, which was then reciprocated by Cypriot President Glafcos Clerides’ visit to Israel, after diplomatic relations were established in 1960.
The relations between the two countries, based on mutual respect for common values such as freedom, equality and democracy have warmed significantly since the beginning of the 21st century. High-level officials maintain frequent, substantial ties in a wide range of fields, with growing collaborations that express the depth and significance of these relations.
In recent years, Israel has felt great support and sympathy in Cypriot public opinion, which considers Israel to be a stable regional power that shares similar regional values and interests. I am proud of all that has been achieved thus far and look to the future for new opportunities to upgrade and deepen the relations, bringing prosperity and wellbeing to both countries and both peoples.
