About International Day of Sport for Development and Peace

The International Day of Sports for Development and Peace is traditionally marked by HP Mostar with the issue of postage stamps. In 2023, the theme is chess, one of the oldest and most widespread board games. The chessboard is square in shape and divided into 64 squares, which are alternately colored in light and dark colors. In the starting position, there are 16 white and 16 black pieces (one king and queen each, 2 rooks, knights and knights, and 8 pawns).

Although the game with this kind of board and figures has been around since VI. century, the final rules were established only in the XIX. century. One player plays with white pieces and he takes the first move, and the other with black pieces. The king can move one square in all directions. And while the cannon or rook can move straight, in a linear fashion for one or more fields, the hunter can only move diagonally. The strongest piece is the queen or queen, which unites the move of the rook and the knight. The only piece that can jump over other pieces is a knight or a knight that moves in the shape of the letter L. A pawn can be moved forward one or two squares from the starting square. If he reaches the last square of his row, he turns, at the player's request, into one of the stronger pieces (except the king). The game ends with the victory of one of the chess players or a draw - no decision. (Željka Šaravanja)
