Happy Anniversary, Romania!
Romfilatelia introduces into circulation on Thursday, December 1st, this year, on the National Day, the postage stamps issue “The Great Union in numismatics”.
The issue consists of four postage stamps, a philatelic block of four perforated stamps, two First Day Covers and a collector’s philatelic album.
Numismatics, a field of passionate collectors, has taken over in the theme of coin issues subjects intended to reflect historical and cultural events, anniversaries of personalities, etc., becoming together with philately an efficient way of presenting and promoting the great values existing in the history of humanity.
The National Bank of Romania has gathered in its numismatic treasure valuable coins issued on the occasion of anniversaries of great personalities, anniversaries of historical landmarks and of the Royal Dynasty of Romania.
For the philatelic issue “The Great Union in numismatics”, Romfilatelia has chosen for the postage stamps four anniversary coins presented in a unified idea of imagistic rendering of the subject: Michael the Brave, precursor of the Great Union, King Ferdinand I, Queen Marie (the first Kings of Greater Romania) and Queen Marie’s golden crown, an artifact of the historical treasure made especially for the moment of the Coronation in Alba Iulia (1922). The coins were issued between 2010-2018.
The postage stamp with the face value of Lei 3.50 reproduces the portrait of the Prince Michael the Brave, precursor of the Great Union (1601), existing on the reverse of the coin issued in 2018, with the obverse depicting the moment of the prince’s entry into Alba Iulia, at the head of his soldiers, in 1601. The coat of arms of Romania completes suggestively, together with the walls of the fortress, the symbol of an important moment in the history of our nation.
The postage stamp with the face value of Lei 4.50 reproduces the portrait of King Ferdinand I, after the Coronation in Alba Iulia, existing on the reverse of the coin issued in 2016, having as obverse details of the elements carved on the royal sceptre.
The postage stamp with the face value of Lei 6.50 reproduces the portrait of Queen Marie, as the crowned Queen of Greater Romania, reproduced on the reverse of the coin issued in 2010, with the wording “Regina Maria a României Mari” (Queen Marie of Greater Romania) inscribed in an arc. The obverse of the coin depicts the Romanian coat of arms, together with a portrait medallion of Queen Marie.
The postage stamp with the face value of Lei 16 reproduces the Queen Marie’s crown, existing on the obverse of the coin issued in 2015. The composition of the image also includes the coat of arms of Romania. The crown was made especially for the Coronation Ceremony in Alba Iulia (1922) and is a treasure of national history. It was made in Paris from gold donated by a gold mine owner from Transylvania. The reverse of the medal depicts the portrait of the crowned Queen with the explanatory wording „Coroana Reginei Maria” (“Queen Marie’s Crown”).
The reproduction of the coins in the images of the postage stamps is accompanied by the portraits of the characters, respectively by the image reproduced in the real colours of Queen Marie’s Crown.

The philatelic album is created into a limited run printing of 311 pieces and it is equipped with the special philatelic block of four imperforated postage stamps of the The Great Union in numismatics numbered from 001 to 311.
