The famous naval engagement, known as the Battle of Lepanto, took place on October 7, 1571 near Naupactus (Lepanto in Venetian). The immediate cause of the conflict was the war between the Venetian Republic and the Sublime Porte.
The engagement ended with the victory of the Holy League (combined Christian fleets). This was the largest and last engagement of rowing vessels.
8 galleys from the Eastern Adriatic coast greatly contributed to the victory at Lepanto, including the Kotor galley “San Trifone of Cattaro,” under the command of Admiral Girolamo Bisante. Fifteen Perast gonfalonieri - the guard of the banners on board the Venetian flagship of Sebastiano Venier - also contributed to the victory. Petar Stjepkov Marković from Perast, was awarded by the Spanish king for his merits in the battle.
Montenegro Post, within the Maritime edition “The Battle of Lepanto”, publishes a commemorative stamp and the first day cover.
