About The Latvian Fund for Nature – Shingled Gladiolus

The new postage stamp is issued in 100 000 copies, with a face value €1.27 corresponding to the postage for letter correspondence in the weight category from 21 to 100 grams in the territory of Latvia. A special envelope (FDC) of 1000 copies (price €2.27) has also been issued with a postage stamp. The author of a design is artist Edgars Folks.

Shingled Gladiolus (Gladiolus imbricatus) is one of the most beautiful plants in the wild of Latvia, with great purple pink or purple, and very rarely white flowers, which bloom from the end of June to the end of July.

In Latvia, Shingled Gladiolus is found quite rarely and unevenly – in wet meadows, shrubs, woodlands, especially in the Daugava and Lielupe Valley. The number of gladiol deposits due to the conversion of habitats – the felling, cultivation, drainage, foreclosure and building of meadows – has decreased significantly over the last century in Latvia, so it has become a threatened plant species included in category 3 of the Red List of Latvia and is protected.
